Damn this was dark! I did not expect this! No one is safe, even children aren't spared in this book which made for some uncomfortable reading sometimes. But all in all this was fast and cool ride.
The story is about Kylar, a street rat trying to become an supernatural assassin, a wetboy. He ends up being the apprentice of Durzo Blint, the best wetboy there is, but will Kylar break with his past to become the best?
Absolutely brutal, the opening chapters are a slap in the face, and after that the book takes you into this dystopian city where corruption lies at every corner and the people you love can be your downfall.
Really cool book, only the political stuff fell a bit flat for me, and that stuff just seemed to happen most of the time.
Will take a tiny break from this series but will start book 2 probably next year.

I'd heard that there's a lot of good in this book, particularly if you enjoy assassin-based fantasy. It's also one of those books that focus more on the characters in the world than the world itself, and that's my kind of story.
The Way of Shadows follows Azoth, who wants more than anything to become a wetboy. Basically an assassin, except better. Of course he doesn't want to apprentice to any wetboy, he wants the best: Durzo Blint.
But the difference between being a wetboy and being an assassin is the talent. Talent is a form of magic that can cloak a wetboy in shadows, muffle his footsteps, give him strength, create illusions. But Azoth doesn't have any talent.
The journey through being Azoth, the poor boy on the street, into Kylar, the killer, isn't a long one. Not to say this is a short book. It isn't. But a lot more plot is packed onto it after his training is done. There is romance, action, political intrigue. There's a lot of death...obviously.
A few things did annoy me about the story.
1. The only thing I really cared about was either Kylar or Durzo's story...and maybe Logan's (Kylar's friend). Every other character was an annoyance that I just wanted to get over.
2. There is magic in this story that witches and magi can cast. And there is also talent. I hate that. I wish there was either talent or magic. Not both. The talent was a good idea because I it was an alternative to the overused 'magic'. But then the author threw magic in the pot too. Grr...that's all I can say.
3. The words. Too many freaking words! Even after reading the entire book, I still need to wiki to keep it all straight. There is a magus and maja (mages) with different colors for each. There is the ka'kari (a magic artifact) which comes in different colors as well as the ka'karifer...someone who can call a ka'kari. There are meisters who use the vir, as well as vurdmeisters. There is a magic sword call curoch. There is a high king AND a Godking. There are three more counsels called the shinga, sakage, and the nine.
Are YOU confused? Because I've been since I started the damn book!
But besides that, I loved reading about Kylar. He starts out as a wimp and becomes one of the strongest male characters that I've read.
As always, I'm not going to jump right into the sequel. I need to read something else first. But I'll get to the second book at some point. Count on it.

First of all, it's so damn long. I've been contemplating to DNF this several times but I pushed through. Thankfully, it's pretty good. Still, I believe it would have been better if it's cut a little shorter.
As for the character, I do like Kylar a decent amount, love his journey, love his relationship with Blint.
However, I found his continuous blaming on himself for what happened to Doll Girl strenuously exhausting. And the fact that the female lead is so damn annoying as well. Oh my lord. I nearly abandoned this book just because I don't like her character.
Please tell me that this series actually get better.
