This short story felt like a dream. I relived my own memories alongside the main character. I remembered snowy days from my childhood, poems I learned in school, I remembered my grandma, ma and aunt baking bread, I remembered the smell of lilacs. Feelings of love, grief, fear, hope. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.

Zanimljivo štivo koje malo pati od prevelikog broja informacija. Ceo izgrađen svet je više za neki roman nego za kratku priču. Bajkovito, originalno, sa (ne)očekivanim krajem, ali falilo mi je nešto da bude petica.

Saffron is a food tester for the Traitor King and must both taste and announce the temporal confections of his banquets. These are no ordinary baked goods and Saffron must struggle with her own desire for revenge and her own powerlessness in her task.

This was so clever and delightful that I'm tempted to call it right now and say this is my favorite Nebula nominated novelette even though I still have a few more to read. The idea that the baked goods could be created in such a way as to evoke certain memories of those who taste it was so compelling. I might be partial to such an idea because I deeply love baking but the lush descriptions almost made me drool. And the way that Saffron's story was threaded with the Traitor King's was done so well that I couldn't stop reading for anything. Highly, highly recommend this story!

this concept >
the moment i realised that the confections are literally "temporal" i said OHH out loud haha
i loved it, it's such a magic-exaggerated lovely play on how sometimes you eat something and you're immediately back in a certain memory...
Spoilerplum dumplings...just thinking about them's enough for memories of sitting in my grandma's kitchen :-)

with each new confection i was wondering more how this would play out and how this concept could be used for revenge!! the ending (last paragraph) confused me a little though, haha even so it was still a great read!

(also the cover is just *Mwah*)
3.5 or 4 stars..? im having a hard time rating short stories..

Delicious

I have a complicated relationship with short stories, often because I feel like (or think I’ll feel like) I won’t know the characters well enough for the story to mean anything to me. The more I read the short stories from authors in the Tor series, the more I’m proven wrong in that assumption.

This is an amazing, genius, unique story that makes you think, “how on earth did she think of that?” It has all the qualities of one of those amazing dreams you have but can’t quite remember all the details when you wake up.

There is such an art to writing short stories, and I truly loved this one. I’m really interested in reading the author’s other books now. I highly recommend this story. It will transport you, for just a little while.
