I was looking forward to this book SO MUCH. I'm not that big a fan of Gideon Crew, though - and I just could not get into the storyline. It was extremely disappointing.

I received a free ARC, however it was missing approx 60 pages, and they were (I felt) important pages, so I decided to wait to finish the book until I could get a full copy.
It was worth the wait. I am a big fan of both authors, and I loved The Ice Limit. This sequel was worth the wait.
If you haven't read The Ice Limit, this book stands on its own. There is a brief overview given by one of the characters. But I do recommend reading the first book, as that truly sets the tone for this story.
If you are a fan of action packed stories, this is your book.
Gideon Crew, a hero from several other books, has been recruited to join a team going to the Antarctic to destroy the meteorite that sank into the ocean 5 years previously. Some of this team made the first journey, and some are new.
Turns out, that meteor was actually an egg or spore, and is now growing at an alarming rate on the ocean floor. It has the potential to destroy the planet if left unchecked. Gideon and his teammates must find a way to destroy this organism, which is much more than it seems, before it destroys the world we live on.
But the organism is protecting itself. Can they destroy it before time runs out? Or before it destroys them?

After reading The Ice Limit several years ago, I'm glad to have such a good conclusion to the story. And I'm even glad it took so long. I really like that they gave the character of Glinn time to develop throughout other novels before bringing this conclusion. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good thriller, because you'll need to know what happens next.
Loved this series as much as the Pendergast novels. These guys create some great stuff.
Gideon Crew is recruited by his boss, Glinn, to go to the edge of Antarctica to help destroy an alien entity that is 2 miles under the ocean. It takes over a month to get there on the ship that his boss rented and he has to learn how to pilot an underwater submersible (DSV). He is attracted to the oceanographer on board and they end up in a relationship. Once they get to the designated spot bad things start to happen. They find the ship that Glinn had been on when the meteorite he was hired to bring back to the U.S. was sunk. The meteorite was actually an alien seed and they find that it has grown into a giant tree like structure.
Gideon takes one of the DSVs to the bottom to check out the alien tree. He sees a brain inside it and almost gets pulled in by it's mouth. He brings a piece of what he thinks is a root or tentacle back to the ship and this causes all sorts of problems. When being examined it ends up becoming active and parts of it become worms that start infecting the crew and taking over the ship. Gideon is trying to figure out where to place the nuclear bomb that he is assembling for maximum destruction. The worms are multiplying and the infected crew is now trying to protect the creature.
Lots of action as different portions of the crew are battling each other as one side wants to kill the creature and the other wants to help it spread. Lots of descriptions of the ship and where the worms are and how they got there. Also lots of discussion on what the creature is, how it functions, how it communicates. Different members of the crew have different specialties and during the story each one is brought into the story.
Gideon is picked to go on a suicide mission near the end as he has an incurable disease and the others are hoping to survive. His girlfriend had been killed earlier so he doesn't object and is hoping to make his life worth something.
Well written, includes lots of scientific discussions and action.

Took a while to get through this.
Unbelievable. Part of the plot was just not plausible.
Still a good read.

It was ok, but not any where near as good as the Pendergast series which I really like.
I’m writing this before I read the book. I told myself I would not read another Gideon Crew novel of theirs, but here I am, starting one. Why? Because it’s a continuation of “The Ice Limit”, which I really liked. I just hope it’s not as hokey as the other two Gideon Crew ones I read. I haven’t read the first page yet, but I also hope it doesn’t start with the words “Gideon Crew…….”, which is what the authors do to make sure you know the name of their series.
Well, of course the novel started with “Gideon Crew…..”, but this was a decently interesting novel that continues the story of the giant meteorite that was the subject of “The Ice Limit”. This book and the previous one remind me of the older Clive Cussler books. It’s science fiction, it’s a thriller, it’s an adventure novel and I was surprised I didn’t dislike it because it’s a Gideon Crew one.
