While the event anchoring the book is the death of the author's grandmother, it is centered around 'her home- a monument of memories'. The skipping from a story to another might seem chaotic and unsettling but that feeling complements the narrative superbly.
The simple language married with chaotic structure does justice to the author's potrayal of coming of age in a conflict stricken Kashmir. It delivers to the readers almost an other world experience leaving one to wonder, is this the same country that they grew up in and they live in?

Do not judge a book by its cover, I keep telling myself. With this book, it was love at first sight. Yet, strangely, it was the e-book that I ended up reading!
Words do not do justice to this book. We know how difficult it is to grow up in Kashmir; reams have been written on how the common people pay the price for a land caught in the pincer grip of militarisation and insurgency. Yet, it takes on a more poignant aspect when you see it through the eyes of an adolescent. A young woman who should be living a normal life, but the only thing normal is the abnormality.
It runs on two parallel timelines- the 24 hours from the time the protagonist's grandmother passed away to when she is taken for burial and her growing up years, which also correspond to the years when the violence escalated and never quite went away.
Strongly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about how Kashmiris deal with what is happening in Kashmir, and for anyone who enjoys reading the memoirs of a normal yet abnormal life
