Whatever your opinions about DFW (I don’t look highly upon him, though I think his best writing were his essays) this is an essential text. I listen to it once a year, and do my best to take it to heart. I fail, cuz I’m human and my “default setting” is always there to remind me that I will fail, but failure means everything when you can learn from it and DO learn from it. Trying to be better everyday.

Well that was quick. Probably like married middle-age midweek sex, butt more fulfilling.

Anyone could read this book, I will not say who should or should not.

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says "Morning, boys. How's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes "What the hell is water?


There is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshiping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship.


It is about simple awareness — awareness of what is so real and
essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, that we have to keep
reminding ourselves, over and over: “This is water, this is water.
