I never heard of this story before. It's basically pure winter and pure fairy tale too. I was surprisingly fond of the characters by the end of it all, too.
The thing that got me the most is how the hero is the female character. Coming from a short story written in the 1800s, that's no small thing. Is the girl the one who goes in a dangerous adventure to find her dearest friend, kidnapped by the Snow Queen. It's so nice.

Gerda and Kay :((((( But being serious, what on earth was the plot of this?
This story changed story lines too many times. Maybe it was the version I was reading, but every page seemed to be something different happening and it didn't flow very well.
I really enjoyed the imagery. I also really enjoyed the theme which centers on childhood innocence and pure intentions.

I got this book for free from Audible.
Not my favorite Andersen tale, but it wasn't so bad, specially for a "Christmas tale". It's a cute story, though I think it's better suited for younger people. You can take a couple of interesting aspects from this book though.
First of all, the lack of a damsel in distress. The main character is a girl that tries to find her best friend after he has been hit with a glass shard that turned his heart cold. She does get her share of help, but she is in no way a damsel in distress. I also enjoyed the entities she found on her way, her determination and strength.
And, of course, there is the weight of friendship instead of the whole "true love" thing, which is absolutely lovely.
Anyway, it's worth checking it out.

Beautiful fairy tale. I can see how Lewis used the Snow Queen in his Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe and Disney's Frozen. I read this to my girls at bed time. And while they didn't understand everything (neither did I) they enjoyed the adventure journey.
