Focuses on the female body and mind from birth to motherhood- how Western girls and women are socialised in a way that leads them to give up their autonomy for security which just ends up leading to resentment and guilt. Calls for a revolution in which women recognise they have autonomy and the ability to demand and be as stubborn as they’ve been told not to be.

not my favourite ever, had some deeply questionable parts but some chapters were extremely good. i can see why this is a staple of feminist theory as it is quite tame compared to others.

a book of its time

I enjoyed the literary criticism in this book. Greer's tracing of the representation of women in fiction and nonfiction texts is interesting!

I struggled with the homophobia and especially the comments made about trans gender people.

I also found some of the comments about sex out of date, but agree with the overall idea that women should feel empowered to express their own sexuality.

A classic for a reason. It paints a very clear picture of life at the time and reflecting on that is interesting but often sad. Must much has been done while so much is left undone.

It’s of it’s time- has a few good points but unfortunately much of the specifics don’t relate that great to the world we live in now- but still a key and important feminist work!!
