We see the thief preaching against theft, and the adulterer against adultery. We have men sold to build churches, women sold to support the gospel, and babies sold to purchase Bibles for the poor heathen! all for the glory of God and the good of souls! The slave auctioneer's bell and the church-going bell chime in with each other, and the bitter cries of the heart-broken slave are drowned in the religious shouts of his pious master.
What a hauntingly sad book. I read this once a few years back but unfortunately couldn't remember much about its content and I'm afraid that'll happen again, but I'd say it is still a very important read for everyone who is okay with graphic scenes.

This is the scariest book I have ever read. I had a dificult time reading it because of the pure horror that Mr Douglass had to go through just to live as a slave. Reading about how a nice woman became his owner and that corrupted her and maade her evil was beyond frightening.
It is an exceptionally well written contemporary account of American slavery by a former slave…
There is not much to say, and the few things I could say he says better… so you’d be better off reading g the book than my review
