I LOVED this book. Such an interesting book that I will for sure re-read. A first hand account of a former slave turned free man by the brilliance of Fredrick Douglas.

Slaves sing most when they are most unhappy. The songs of the slave represent the sorrows of his heart; and he is relieved by them, only as an aching heart is relieved by its tears

you have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man.

This was definitely an incredibly eye-opening read for me. I am ashamed at myself for the fact that it took me this long to read it. I wish this book was part of the required reading list in my English classes when I was growing up.

After Roots, The Confessions of Nat Turner, etc., I can't say I "learned" anything about slavery and the desire for freedom from this quick read. But for me, the fluctuations in writing style -- from scared child, to preacher, etc. -- were fascinating.

the writing at times is fantastic but towards the end the pure amount of examples and reiteration makes it a difficult read
