Mark Twain satirizes almost an entire religious foundation. His wit and sarcasm are abundant as ever.
The remote Austrian village the story is set in is named Eseldorf, which is German for "Assville."

He uses some very chilling thought experiments about a deterministic worldview and what that means for human morality. Overall this story aims to question our established beliefs on morality and the traditional religious structures that offer a moral foundation and ultimately, the futility of human life. While the story ultimately unravels, the beginning portion of the book is as down to earth and charming as any other Twain mainstay. Due to the direct attacks on christian belief, this one isn't making any school reading lists anytime soon, but is a fun an engaging tale for those open to questioning the sillier aspects of religion.

I think I read Paine's version (I think the astrologer is unique to Paine's version). Anyway, a fun little allegory deriding organized religion, government and people in general.

Interesting and thought provoking book. The fables and short stories at the end weren't that good.

Amazing book. Mark Twain had some fascinating insights into how humans function amongst themselves.
