Read in preparation for our New Orleans trip. Took P a bit to get into it but then she was the one asking me to read at night.
A decent storyline. Just felt some aspects of the story were a little far fetched for the time period.
This was a read aloud book for us and both my 11 yr old and I enjoyed it. The topics are a bit heavy, but I guess that's what real life is and now that she's older we will be reading deeper books together. We both agreed that we liked how the story ended.

Better than I was anticipated. I was afraid it would be another plantation/slave book. I was pleasantly surprised by the plot and characters. I am not wanting to know more about the introduction of workers from China to the South after the Civil War. This was an interesting turn in the plot. I like the main character also. She was a good strong female role model. Not perfect, but that was what made her such a good character. (after civil war, sugar cane, migrant workers, china)
Set in 1870s US- tells the story of a ten year old girl's life on a plantation. The books is well written and deserves its place on the 2016 Children's Sequoyah list nominees.
