I was upset enough about a scene in this book that I had to read a couple of palate cleansers before coming back to review it. The troubling scene involved sexual violence, a scene which “replays” (though as a memory and in an abbreviated form) at a later time in the book. It was graphic and shockingly violent, especially considering the players involved in the imagination-contrived scene.

In my opinion, the same result could have been achieved in a dozen different ways that did not involve one character perpetrating SA against another character, and an editor or sensitivity reader should have suggested alternatives.

I did enjoy the overall plot, characters, and the world building, but based on that one scene (and revisiting it with the promise of revisiting it AGAIN in future books in the series), I cannot blindly recommend this book.

If I enjoy a book well enough to finish it, it gets an automatic 3.0 stars, as I DNF a LOT of books. This would have likely been a 4.0 for me if not for that scene.

A more detailed content warning is in my further information below, but it does contain slight spoilers.

You might enjoy this book if you like books with: school settings, faerie magic, young adult romance

My review:
I love how clearly the magic system is set up and how the story unfolds! I love the book but that does not mean I approve of all of the gut wrenching plot twists. The setup for the next book is so good and I’m mad that I can’t immediately start the next one.

Mariah, what did you do to me?! I NEED this second book! I read this ARC is only 2 days!

For anyone seeking a book that fuels your need for a magical adventure, this is the one! Welcome to the island of Eshol, where all 18 year olds are brought to the Institute to receive their Brand that gives them a piece of the island’s magic. However, when Rayna Drey is set to receive her magic, an unfamiliar force within her is awakened. She must figure out what this force is before the Good Council does. And, by the way, she has to collaborate with a dangerous (and hottttt) mind manipulator to do so. This story of secrets, magic, desire, loyalty, and trust is one that will make you place guards around your heart, just to destroy them and scramble to put them back together.

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic read!
