My first 5 star book of the year! Woohoo! Finished this in two sittings. It’s definitely YA, and not in a beautiful, descriptive way. The writing is simplistic and the teen characters are stereotypical… the brooding, complicated one, the snobby Sheriff’s daughter, the comic relief. (Harry, Hermione and Ron, now that I really think about it…) But it works. They don’t need to be anything more than that. There’s a reason we see these archetypes so often. The main character gets a satisfying conclusion that adds some depth to his journey. The story is gripping and you think you know where it’s going but you’re wrong. THAT’S what I’ve been searching for in my last 6 books: a gasp-worthy twist that makes you want to throw the book across the room. I’ll be picking up Lally’s next novel (which just came out last month) ASAP! Hooray for new favourites!

The writing in That’s Not My Name leans heavily into YA territory, which might not work for every reader, but the dual-timeline plot is really compelling. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the twist at the end completely blindsided & destroyed me.

That’s Not My Name was well-paced, kept me on the edge of my seat, and dropped a twist at the end that I was NOT expecting. It was a pretty standard thriller until the end, but the twist earned an extra star from me. It’s a quick, easy read too, which was a nice bonus.

I’d recommend it!
