I’ve been meaning to read this book for a long time, but I always found a reason not to. It’s a shame that I waited so long. It is utterly brilliant on so many levels.

An oldie but a goodie. Another great read from Ms. Kingsolver. I just love her way with words. Great relationships and bigger message about the world we live in!

I'm writing rapid reviews because I'm so far behind, but I will say nearly the same thing about this book that I said about Demon Copperhead. Kingsolver writes with such humanity and humor that it makes the depth of grief and sadness in her books go down so much easier. She just "gets it"- what it means to be Southern, what it means to be HUMAN; and how we all have a story to tell and how those experiences shape us, for better or worse. Her books always have portions that drag for me, which is why they don't reach 5 stars, but she is an incredible writer and an incredible storyteller. I'm so glad I finally got to this!

This was a wonderfully written book about a missionary family in the Congo. The story is told through five different narrators. I liked reading the different voices and opinions and reactions to the situation. It is captivating and entertaining.

so many thoughts

barbara kingsolver is a talented writer and can write some banger lines, but this book was a bit of a slog for me; overall i think it’s a pretty good book with some really interesting and nuanced conversations, that being said, some of the choices are questionable and i think she really leans into uncomfortable moments

I think this book was good, but I’m a little fascinated by how popular it is! For how many years people go crazy over this. I’m just not sure why it’s created such an effect and other books of similar caliber have not.
