The strength of this book was the author’s in depth knowledge of the Tolkien legendarium and his ability to draw from this body of work to illustrate his thoughts on one of the most mysterious beings therein - Tom Bombadil. Tolkien was a Christian as is this author so prepare yourself for a fair number of Christian interpretations. I see Tolkien’s work as also thoroughly ensconced in the pagan histories of the Norse, Germanic people & old Britain, so I saw alternatives to the ideas put forward here.

This book is like a little taste of amazing chocolate. It leaves you wanting so much more. I learned so much about Tolkien, his genius, and how significant words and music used to be.
My new life goal is to read all of Tolkiens legendarium

If you have the option to hear it read by the author, I highly recommend that!

A distinctive pondering of one of my favorite characters in all of literature. Reading this gives me new perspective on the character and thoughts to think through in my daily life. Only taking off 0.5 rating points due to the necessity of recapping so much of Bombadil's character and story.

Decent literary analysis of Tolkien with some good insights (particularly about Goldberry!). But it tends to ramble at points.

Rating: 3.5 Stars (Good).

An interesting read. Short and to the point.

Before I had met Tom Bombadil, I had unintentionally purchased this book. This book came packaged with two other books in the Dominion Bundle from Canon Press and I am very glad that I got it when I did. It came in the mail right as I was coming to the end of Return of the King and I had been itching to dive into it as soon as I finished the series.

I really liked Bombadil after reading The Fellowship of the Ring. I thought he was quite intriguing and almost like a breath of fresh air before the hobbits went on their perilous journey. There was something about him that piqued my interested. His mannerisms and quirkiness, but also his responsibility were felt by me.

It was interesting to read Wiley’s thoughts and theories about Bombadil and Goldberry. There is something beautiful about the way Tom does best only what he can do and how he creates and maintains environments in which things he loves (Goldberry, the forest, etc) are able to thrive in what they do best.

There are many lessons in this book and I will definitely return to this on my next read of LOTR.
