I'm generally considered a big fan of historical fiction, so picking up this book while I was travelling overseas seemed just about right up my alley. It took me a little over two years to get past the first chapter, despite finding it wildly interesting, and that just about sums up my review of this collection.

The concepts and history presented within the book are undeniably eye-opening, but it's underlined with a structure whose messiness is so prominent it makes the entire thing just a little bit too hard to follow. Also, I don't entirely know how comfortable I am with how muddled the facts are with fiction in this book.

I will say, a large redeeming quality of this collection IS the way that it's compiled. Everything ties together into the main theme (and the title of the book) - with the epilogue particularly wrapping everything up nicely. Really goes to show how important the order of pieces is in a collection like this.

"The night gardener once asked me if I knew how citrus trees died: when they reach old age, if they are not cut down and they manage to survive drought, disease and innumerable attacks of pests, fungi and plagues, they succumb from overabundance. [...] It is a strange sight, he said, to see such exuberance before death. [...] I asked him how long my own citrus had to live. He told me there was no way to know, at least not without cutting it down and looking inside its trunk. But, really, who would want to do that?"

Livro genial. Mistura dados e personagens reais com ficção, mas a trama é absurdamente bem construída.
