I have to confess I didn't finish this book. Boyden's writing is beautiful, but I just can't get into his books. I enjoyed Will's story and his character, even though it seemed to take a long time to get anywhere, but Annie seemed fake, and annoyed me. With every second chapter being Annie's story it was hard to slog through and I eventually gave up.

Beautifully crafted book. The intersecting stories held my interest from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book and look forward to picking up Boyden's The Orenda in 2015.
Stopped reading. Just couldn't get into it. "Orenda" was much more compelling.
I'm a big Boyden fan and having spent a significant part of my career working with First Nation people, I loved the "voice" of this story and the references to traditions and beliefs. I will admit, I liked "Three Day Road" better ... but although this book makes passing reference to "Three Day" and the main characters are the next generations, they are two different books and two different story lines so any comparison is unfair. The one thing that does resonate with me ... in "Three Day," Boyden deals with the topic of First Nation men going to fight in WWI, a war that was arguably not theirs to fight and die for. In this book, the family grapples with another kind of war persistent in First Nation communities today; one that is indirectly a consequence of the lifestyle imposed by colonization. Interesting parallels can be drawn in the tearing apart and coming together of families that result from these two wars.
My second 5 star read from [a:Joseph Boyden|88550|Joseph Boyden|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1253557607p2/88550.jpg]. I read [b:The Orenda|18339647|The Orenda|Joseph Boyden|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1393218865s/18339647.jpg|24652514] earlier this summer and fell in love with this guy's writing style. This guy can write, really well. I enjoyed the Orenda more but this one was still so very good. Don't expect a lot of action as the chapters alternate between two narrators telling their stories to one another but do expect to get drawn into their stories. At least I did. It seems I'm reading this 'trilogy' backwards but I'm planning on reading [b:Three Day Road|666867|Three Day Road|Joseph Boyden|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347488287s/666867.jpg|809209] next. I can't wait.
I loved this book. Boyden did an amazing job of taking me to place I’ve never been. I felt like I was there with the characters, snd the story! A great story of family and loyalty, of tragic loss and infinite hope.
I feel like this is the one that he was positioning to become a CBC series, and they probably would've made it too, if it weren't for those troubling allegations.
