I loved this book so much. Devoured it. The twists and turns were perfect and the ending had me gasping. Did not see that coming.

Our characters kinda suck but the twists were twisting and I sped through this one.

I give the author credit for writing a book that was tense--a thriller. But I took off so many stars because I thought that, overall, the novel was completely far-fetched and absurd. It went too hard into the unreliable narrator troupe, explaining the many reasons why the narrator might be confused and hitting the reader over the head with them. There were sudden, jarring descriptions of sexual assault that seemed unnecessary for the plot--the author could have gotten to the same results without them. I read this as an ebook, and there appeared to be pages and pages of exposition, with one character asking a question and the person doing the explaining saying "Hold on; I'll get there when I'm ready"--even the characters seemed to be growing tired of the soliloquies. There were far too many coincidences to help the plot move along.  And I don't believe that there's a person on this earth that believes the phrase "I hope you die in your sleep" is an acceptable alternate phrase for "I love you." Altogether, it seemed ridiculous, and made me want to remove all of the thrillers from my TBR list.

Book Review: Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney

Alice Feeney’s Beautiful Ugly is a psychological thriller that delves into the complexities of relationships, secrets, and the power of perception. The story follows Abby, a woman who has always prided herself on her intuition, believing she understands those closest to her—especially her husband, Grady. However, as unsettling truths begin to unravel, Abby finds herself entangled in a web of deception that challenges everything she thought she knew. At the heart of the novel is a tight-knit group of women who seek solace and strength in one another, forming a community built on trust and shared experiences. But when betrayal surfaces in unexpected places, the lines between love, loyalty, and revenge blur, leading to a shocking and thought-provoking conclusion.

I thoroughly enjoyed Beautiful Ugly and found it to be a fast-paced, engaging read. Feeney masterfully weaves in twists and turns that kept me guessing—I thought I had figured out where the story was headed, only to be surprised at every turn. I particularly resonated with the theme of women supporting women and the idea of creating a space where they could find comfort and understanding in one another. The most unexpected moment for me was Grady’s betrayal of Abby; just when he believed he had everything figured out, he was completely wrong. It serves as a reminder that certainty is often an illusion. While Abby’s final act felt like a moment of well-earned revenge, it also left me pondering—does getting even truly bring happiness? Feeney leaves readers with that lingering question, making Beautiful Ugly not just a thriller, but a deeper exploration of human nature and justice.

Slow at times, and somewhat predictable along the way. Not my favorite, but still felt compelled to finish.
