It's clearly early Butcher, which means it's rough and more than a little sexist. When it gets out of its own way with that bullshit, it's entertaining and a fun adventure.

To many references to sexual assault and to much of a focus on slavery in the world for me. It's wild how the author can come up with a whole fantasy setting but have to rely on sexual assault and slavery to drive the story. Not creative in my opinion.

A pretty solid fantasy romp, with some relatively interesting magic mechanics.
I was initially impressed by the introduction of two women without being given a description of their breasts, though this was quickly rectified. Despite this, and some very uncomfortable sexual violence the book generally and ultimately depicted most of its characters pretty well in service of the story and inter-character relationships.

Jim Butcher storytelling is excellent. However the way he writes romance and sexual tensions  does feel cliché and overdone at times. Still a very enjoyable read.

this is a fun little book, and not a bad crack at hard fantasy for the Dresden Files guy. unfortunately, here are two things that ruin it for me:

1) he wrote this based on a bet that he received on a forum that he could not successfully combine "Pokemon" and "Roman legions" together in one book. this brings a lot of the decisions made in here into clarity, and not in a way that i really enjoy.

2) (CW: sexual assault)

it features the most doggedly persistent attempted rapist i've ever seen in a book. i mean, this guy just won't go away. he's like the Michael Myers of raping. i hate it

unfortunately, these reservations kind of sink the book for me, and i would not recommend it.
