1.5 stars.
This was not the book for me, I hated the beginning and the ending...I really enjoyed meeting the parents and the experiences that took place at the farm house (this saved the book from being a solid 1 star). I can see how some will come to love this book and how others could hate it. Personally, I found the novel trying too hard, it tried hard at being pretentious, it tried hard at being a thriller, and it tried even harder to make you "love" or "care" about the main characters. I felt as if things were purposefully added to create "depth" to the characters but in time proved to be pointless, either that was the intention or the author was trying to meet a word count. And with that in mind, I felt as if some of the things that were used to enhance the storyline were completely forgotten about or just left out on purpose. Honestly, I can see this book having a cult following and being defended with the phrase "people just don't get it," and that is perfectly fine because I do not care to "get it".
I have not seen the Netflix adaptation, but I MIGHT watch it and reread the book again (it is not a very long book and can be finished in a couple of hours) and then I may have differing opinions on the book, but not likely.

When I'm thinking clearer, I will write a full review. All I can say is wow. And Gillian Flynn has nothing on this author.
