I expected this to be a downer memoir of grief (by this man who lost his mom at age 5, one of eleven kids), but it was really a funny and reflective memoir about his family, childhood, and growing up in Northern Ireland in the Troubles. Medium paced bc it is not short but reads very easily!

I don’t give star ratings to memoirs but if I did this one would get all the stars. It’s hilarious even though it deals with heavy topics (mainly his mother’s death from cancer). I read it in one sitting.

As a memoir, this is pretty good and funny! I tend to like this type of book anyway, but the fact that it took place in a different country was an added bonus. And the fact that it took place in Northern Ireland, in Derry? Give me a break, I'm in! I love the show Derry Girls l, so this book provided another facet to and added to my knowledge of that area.

Some of the stories he told were downright hilarious, many were touching. I really appreciated what I felt was a refreshing perspective on a son and his relationship to his father.

Despite the continual thread of the death of a parent throughout this book, it was not something that colored my view of this. As someone who usually feels fairly sensitive to parents dying in books and finds it triggering, I was okay with this.
