I’ll start with the positive aspects. I enjoyed the main mystery of the book and did not see the outcome ahead of time. The older subplots were also handled well and I thought they came together in a believable manner.
Now on to my grievances. I found the characters to be very cliche for the first 65% of the book. I was going to lose my mind if I had to read one more of Julia’s imagined hashtags or hear from Izzy how a true crime podcast would handle something. Also, I just found Izzy to be annoying overall. She seemed overly suspicious if David from the beginning. Meanwhile, she’s the one who is lying to him. I also didn’t want to keep about how hard nannying was. What did she expect? Then within 24 hours she’s saying how much she hates leaving them so she can take a walk. Too over the top for me.
This book was alright. I enjoyed the last 25% the most.

Great summer read! It has some slow parts but there are also quite a few twists along with way.  I enjoy multiple point of view storylines and how the relationships intersect and develop. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC.

Overall, I think that this book was just okay for me?🤷🏻 I liked some bits and others I did not. I think that the first 40% of this book was quite slowwww and I found myself bored. It was very character driven with little to no breadcrumbs left behind for the readers to get excited about. But after 40%, I feel like this picked up a bit more and I was intrigued with the mystery of it all.

The cast of characters is quite large- almost too large if you ask me. It was hard to keep track of everyone. I think that the tension and well-crafted mystery of it all kept me reading. You could see the build up for the plot and the puzzle building. Slow burn, unreliable narrators, eerie vibes, and a great summer setting! I love a book set on a lake.😁 It is the perfect summer vibes. ☀️Lots of twists thrown in to keep you hanging until the end. Although, sometimes less is more!

I picked up The Lake Escape as I was in the mood for an engaging thriller that didn’t require a lot of brain power. It fit the bill, the alternating dual points of view held my attention and I kept turning the page as I wanted to know how it would end.

My main issue with the book was the writing. I don’t expect beautiful prose from a thriller but I want the writing to keep me engaged and not take me out of the story. With this book, I kept noticing the awkward phrasing. The writing felt very juvenile and cringey. There was section at the end that was written as a podcast and it was poorly done. It was as though the author had never listened to a true crime podcast before. For this reason, I don’t think I will pick up any other books by this author.

Thank you to Goodreads and St Martin’s Press for an advanced copy; all opinions are my own.
