I need to give this another go at some point, the rating is preliminary. I was enjoying it mostly, but I found my attention span just wandering off at the least provocation. I can only conclude that whilst it was enjoyable, it wasn't gripping, as opposed to the first in the series, Among Thieves.

More than just a few surprises in this one.

Find "Among Thieves" then read it.
Then get this, and read it too.

You might forget to eat and sleep. You might need to call in sick. Your recovery will neatly coincide with finishing both books and getting a decent night of sleep and a good breakfast.

Basically, I am really loving the "Tales of the Kin" series, and I hope Hulick will keep writing them.

I enjoyed this followup to the authors first book but I was expecting great based on the first book and got decent. I am wondering how much if this is due to the fact that this was not available in audiobook as the narration was really stellar for the first one. I was also expecting quite a bit more action scenes and had some trouble keeping my reading momentum in the middle of the book. Overall though, the author has told another good story and the finish of this book was really enjoyable. I certainly hope that the author will be writing further in this world but not sure of the status at this time.

4 Stars for an enjoyable followup novel.

Fortunately, I just finished the first book in the series and didn't have a long delay before I could start this one. (Unfortunately, I'm now waiting for the next one, along with everyone else...)

The Tales of the Kin series reminds me of Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard series, as it explores the underworld - the criminals and the organizations that bind them together. Both are original enough that you don't feel like you've read this same story fifty times before plus the main characters are flawed yet likeable. Mix in some humor and action and you end up with an enjoyable read. The Tales of the Kin is a fun series so far and it will be interesting to see what direction it takes.

Although someone could easily pick this book up and understand what's going on, I recommend reading the first in the series because it gives very important background and context to the events in this book. However, I think this one is even better than the first book - Hulick has developed as a writer and the story goes deeper into the history of the degans and the empire.

Sounding a fair bit like Lamora, Drothe is definitely an engaging character. Getting into messes not of his causing, and being fairly out of his depth, Douglas Hulick paints a good tale, packed with introduction to a new city and culture, while exploring the back story of the Degans. However, it is this element that is sufficiently not as high stakes as expected, which forces the rating of the book down. Hopefully, there is more to look forward now that the stage has been set
