Ugh...
In my opinion, Heathcliff was just so freaking sick! I really couldn't stand him.

I can never not think of Wuthering Heights when I see a moor (bonus points if it’s windy to the point that you can’t even open your mouth without choking on a mouthful of your own hair).
Probably one of my favourite books. Tragic and violent with just enough intergenerational trauma to make me think of classical tragedies.

look, i’m sorry, ok? the person most disappointed about this rating is MYSELF because i had such high hopes for this book. but it was just… bleh. it has the same problem as the age of innocence by edith wharton which i read earlier this year in that i just don’t care. i dont care about the characters i dont care about the conflict and the only thing keeping my reading was i just wanted to say i had finished it. this book is so unpleasant. every character sucks and everyone dies and there are so many revenge plots going on but somehow all of that is boring!!! and so much incest!!! i’m not saying that characters have to all be morally good to enjoy a book but at least make your morally grey characters interesting otherwise you’ve lost me and i don’t care
perhaps it is my bias, considering this is my favorite novel, but i find wuthering heights to be less a love story than a study on obsession, cruelty, and the corrosive nature of such feverish passion.
this is no gentle romance, but a tempest; a love story stripped of civility, as raw and unforgiving as the setting in which it takes place. a love story in which beauty and brutality are indivisible.
the genius of wuthering heights is its ability to work on several levels at once: it's gothic tragedy, social critique, psychological study, and a meditation on the destructive endurance of passion. with characters that are flawed to their core, a setting that is practically a living presence, and a frame narrative that makes us question the events of the novel due to the unreliable nature of the narrators -- wuthering heights, to me, almost reads like a ghost story. the retelling of events through layers of memory blurs the line between truth and legend.
even after so many years, wuthering heights resonates, because what could be more human than longing for a love, a connection, so profound that it feels eternal so much so that we disregard the notion that it could be the thing to ruin us.
Going into Chapter 2 I had to look up some information because I was utterly confused, but then I found out I was supposed to be. The story starts out with a character visting Wuthering Heights who knows nothing about the folks whi live there, so you find out things at the same pace he does.
I was pleasantly surprised. Usually the style of older classics are difficult for me to get into, but I actually found this very easy to read and it held my attention well.
The timeline was odd though. A very unlikely amount of things happen within a very short period of time. Theres also no way to tell the passage of time unless Nelly outright tells you.
I still don't love classics or Gothic literature but it wasn't bad.
