Very interesting and sad. Seems like a very socially critical and male heavy view on young women and girls and theirs struggles. Don’t know if this was intentional or not, but is sadly a accurate description of the real world.

This was a really interesting book. The prose mirrors the style of 'on earth we are briefly gorgeous' in being poeticly written. Unfortunately, it is a victim of its time with several outdated stereotypes, however I still enjoyed it overall

Beautifully written but frustrating. I feel like I didn’t fully «get» it. None of the characters got to be real characters, and this was probably the author’s intention, commenting on American suburbia in a specific moment in time as a collective consciousness/organism obsessed with the girls existing somewhere on the margins. Pretty cool in its own way and it felt meaningful, but definitely hard to connect to when there’s no real main character(s) to grow attached to, and hard to differentiate most of the girls.

So many creepy descriptions of a 13 y/o girl. Her "budding chest", her "pagan nudity" and "her small body giving off the odor of a mature woman". Also refers to a character as a r*tard and mentions his small Japanese eyes.

This is a strike of genius that could have been ever so slightly more concise. But what a great critique of the male gaze and suburban society.

Painful in so many ways. First, the positives: Eugenides is structurally a very good writer. He wrote about a topic that was abysmally bleak, and he made a horribly depressing book on purpose, I suppose. So, given that this was probably his goal, indicting religious extremism, parental authoritarianism, teen angst, and how we handle death in general, and I would say he was successful there. But, come on, despite all the metaphorical digs at society, do I really need to reward this grim book with a good review? How could I possibly recommend it to someone other than someone I hoped would soon put their head in an oven? I'll say that a lot about it was "interesting", but I can't say that I enjoyed the read.
