While I don't agree with all her opinions, this book is absolutely vital for our culture to read and take to heart. We can take the lessons of the pandemic, a forced slowing, and move forward to improve our lives and those of our loved ones. We can value the things we've been brainwashed into setting aside. We can re-write the system of authentic value, rewrite the definition of essential. This is for our benefit.

Really struggling to follow the train of thought and interspersed quotes in this narrative. I expected more analysis based on the description, and while the author’s background and story is interesting, it isn’t what drew me to pick up this book. As a person who has no children, but is often part of a “village,” the analysis about how mothering is part of social structure is what I was hoping to find (and haven’t so far).

Good premise and liked her first book, took a long time to get into the main points of the book.

As other reviews have pointed out, Essential Labor is more memoir than anything. It wasn't quite what I expected. I thought it strayed from the supposed point of the book quite a bit, and didn't go in enough depth in many places. Garbes is a great writer and Essential Labor is still an interesting read. But honestly, it didn't really offer me anything new.
