Loved this story. I had no idea what exactly to expect before reading it, but I have wanted to read it since it came out. I finally got the opportunity this year for the middle-grade book club at work. I felt deeply for Xan and her choices and hope my kids read this so we can talk about the themes in the novel.

This is a beautiful fairy tale about the power of love and goodness. The Protectorate is ruled by men and women who restrict access to knowledge and use fear to maintain control over the populace. They maintain a very high status while the majority of the people suffer. The bonds of love that unite our main protagonists ultimately prevail in a satisfying way and the Protectorate is transformed. A truly satisfying read.

DNF'd. It was cute in the beginning and I loved the baby dragon but it just felt as if it was going on and on. It also felt very depressing and I just didn't feel like it was doing anything for me. Made it 3/4 of the way until I just couldn't anymore.
