book gave me a headache . anger, fury, rage, resentment towards this book. a complete waste of time. (take this with a grain of salt, no hate) halfway thru i basically had to skim it to finish it.

I did have nitpicks in the middle, mainly about the pacing of the book. And the target readership. But overall, I love this book to pieces. Sometimes if it's a 5⭐ you just know. And in this case I just know.

The ending was very nice, but the journey there felt like it dragged, though I speculate that's just because I didn't love the characters.

I was turned off almost immediately by the storyteller speaking in an annoyed tone telling me / a child to "Oh, stop fidgeting!" but I tried to give it the benefit of doubt that maybe I was being too harsh. Perhaps I have an unknown case of rejection sensitive dysphoria, but hearing it and several other annoyed interjections to the child/ren listening to the story made me really angry, like "This grandma has no idea what ADHD kids need and maybe even hates children in general." In that way, it felt ableist, I guess? Ignorant and infuriating in the very least for me.

The rest was okay, but I remember all the "mature" characters seemed to have this similar way of handling things/each other. I mean, it's realistic, but I dislike when people are like that, so there's my vote. The characters did have their good qualities too, and the ending was really nice, as I mentioned. The concept and magic system was fresh as well. But I never fell in love with any character, so it was a trudge to finish. I had a desire to DNF at halfway, but I was determined to see it through.

I cried a few times, it was super super cute. Love that other than the story of this young witch coming into her powers, it has many different themes that were explored wonderfully. There was the found-family trope (beautiful!!), the acceptance of sorrow, the fight against tyranny, and even a beautifully poetic way to describe the death of someone close to you.

I recommend this in audiobook, the narrator was spectacular.

This novel is charming with a beautiful message about love, family, and hope triumphing over evil, fascism, and sorrow. There was some religious themes and concepts that occurred as well.

I’m confused as to why Ethylene’s role was kind of glossed over? It felt like she and her former sisters were going to do something major to dismantle the Protectorate, but all they did was lock up the loyalist sisters? 🤔

Such a nonsense book ,it doesn’t even deserve one star . I am astonished by the number of 5 star reviews this book is getting . This book is the best example of don’t judge a book by its cover . Even I brought it because of its pretty cover , but I’ve never read such bs book in my entire life.

Maybe the problem is that I am too old to read this book , but even if I read it when I was 9 or 10 , it would get the same reaction out of me. The story is complex and confusing , I don’t even think the small kids would understand this type of writing .

Long story short , I Dnf this book , and don’t plan to read it again in the future
