Utterly lovely fantasy with themes of staying true to oneself, loving everything in the world, and resisting cruelty by finding hope in the face of sorrow. Beautiful language, charming characters, and that ineffable feeling of fairytale. Deserves to be a classic.

A girl growing up with a kindly old witch in a house in the woods, a town shrouded in mist and mystery, a prisoner sending flocks of paper birds from her tower cell to search for her lost daughter... The atmosphere and imagery of this book was immaculate. And the premise and themes were interesting. I particularly liked how the book explored the shaping of history and the power of stories.

Unfortunately, it was a bit slow at first and the plot lacked the tension that would want you to keep reading. Nothing much happens while Luna's growing up and only near the end does the plot really kick in. The climax also felt a bit anticlimactic and I was annoyed that the story skipped over a bunch of it to get straight to the happy ending. The message at the end about hope was also a bit cheesy and on the nose for my taste. There were some loose ends too, like what's up with Glerk and the bog and why Fyrian got big all of a sudden.

Overall, it was a pleasant reading experience, but I do think the average 12 yo reader would get bored quickly due to the lack of plot progression. The writing is beautiful though and the characters are enjoyable, except for Glerk and Fyrian, who I found a bit annoying.

Lovely. I feel guilty for not finding it more engaging.

This book was weird. I liked the idea of the story, but not the execution. I didn't click with the prose at all. To me it sounded just confusing and pretentious. The pacing was all over the place and the last 50 pages were a convoluted mess.
Another reviewer said "i thought there would be action and a lot of magic but it was mostly boring" and I agree.
The best thing about this book by far is the cover.
