I am giving this book four stars for the themes/vibes. These themes are right up my alley: family (chosen and blood) and love, hope over all else, good against evil. This book tugged at my heart strings in so many ways.

So it SHOULD have been a home run five star book for me.
But....
....something is off about this book. I think it's the pacing which is incredibly slow. And themes/parts of it that aren't quite fleshed out. I debated giving it a lower rating for these....but the themes win the day. I'm a sucker for a good found family, changed hearts, love over all themes.

I found this book a little boring at times; I had to force myself to keep reading it at some points. It got better as the characters got older and more interesting. I like fantasy books, but this one just didn't do much for me. Of course, I like a happy ending, and there is certainly an element of good vs. evil that middle grade readers will enjoy.

A very fun story with a bittersweet ending.

If you have the opportunity to listen to the audio version, do it!

I think the ending was a bit rushed, perhaps would have been a good duology, but otherwise a good book

fyrian :D :D !!!!!

Book clubbed this with A and I'm so glad I did. This book is rich and beautiful. Densely packed with good messages for kids (and all of us). So creative and truly such a joy to read.

A story about sorrow and hope, love and loss, and poetry. A story about the power of stories, and the power of magic. A story about mistakes and about forgiveness. A story about a world that is full of both darkness and light, but--after everything--is very, very good.

Every year, the town leaves the youngest baby in the forest as an offering to the witch. Every year a witch finds a baby and takes them to a new family who will look after them. Along the way the witch will feed the baby from the stars. This time the witch feeds the baby from the moon, and everyone knows that the moon is magic.

I absolutely love the Luna, Xan, the Swap Monster and the Perfectly Tiny Dragon. How they are a family who loves each other, so much so that they want to protect each other which leads to secrets being revealed.
