This was a gorgeous and haunting read. Sixteen year old Lydia is the glue that holds her family together, and when, shortly after her 16th birthday, she is found dead, her family - father James, mother Marilyn, older brother Nathan, and younger sister Hannah - fall apart. This is not a murder mystery, but a character study of a family through the decades, what made them and what threatens to destroy them. Some may not like the ending, but I found it fitting and realistic.

took me longer than usual to finish this book because the plot didn't make me want to keep reading. but i did find myself tearing up at some parts that i could relate to. i really understood the siblings and got frustrated by the parents. i liked but didn't love the book but there's no real reason why.. mixed feelings are what i'm left with.

You know how a book stresses you out but is very well-written? Everything I Never Told You is one such book. And while the book draws you in and grips you, I must say also that I don't agree with the choices of several of the characters. It seems to be, however, a very accurate painting of
interracial marriages
especially in the earlier days.

Growing up in an Asian household, however, I must say that the pressure the children here felt is very real. There is always that underlying tension that Asian parents often unconsciouly deliver to their children. "You must be better." "You must get top grades." "You must make good friends." "You must have a respectable career."
