Okay Read
This was an alright read. This is the first book of the Academy of the Devil series. It is a paranormal reverse harem bully romance book. in this book, our heroine, Alyssa has to go to an academy where the next Satan is to be chosen. I thought the story had an intriguing premise, but I thought the book was a bit boring. The first half of the book was slow, but then it started getting good during the second half. Also, I thought the characters could use more development. I would have liked to know more about Alyssa. I thought she was a bit annoying at times. Also, I thought the guys in the story needed more development as well. The ending was interesting. I wonder what will happen to the story and characters in the next 2 books. I might continue the series next month if I have time. I just thought that this one was lacking for me. Overall, an okay read.

Ok this was WAY better than I expected! I have been let down by too many sub par academy PNRs, so I didn’t have the highest hopes but I was wrong. This was very cool
Graphic: Animal death, Bullying, Chronic illness, and Violence
Moderate: Incest and Sexual content
Minor: Suicidal thoughts and Car accident
So there is incest - it’s between two minor side character students and it’s never explained why the author chose to make these two odd literally do each other like it was normal. I dunno if it was supposed to be a “demons gonna demon” thing but it def was super gross and not at all necessaryjacklesmo's review against another edition

Interesting start to a new series. I’m very curious to see where the series goes

It was interesting and engaging enough to be a quick read and I read it in one go.
Although I wanted more smut because that's what I thought it was.
And if it was a fantasy, then I wanted more depth.
The problem was that it was deep enough to be a fantasy drama but also not shallow enough to be just smut. It was somewhere in between which just confused me and put me off.
However, it was good and interesting that I will be going to the 2nd one right now.
I hope we can explore the characters in a little bit more depth, especially the guys. Alyssa is likeable. The portrayal of bullying and ableism is really well done. It made my heart break a few times for Alyssa and just how alone and cornered she was.
Waiting for what the next book has in store... Godspeed :)

Awesome read, well written with a great plot and characters. I was absorbed from beginning to end. I loved this book and cant wait to read the next in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Booksprout.

Interesting concept. Skipped time a lot so I felt I was missing things. Didn't like the twist. Sorry.

I'm not absolutely sure how I ended up finding this book. I know I was looking for a new book series to read and browsing online articles which led me to a different author. However, when I started browsing books at my local libraries through my Libby app, somehow this book ended up in my timeline. Since Book One of the series was available in audiobook, I decided to check it out.
I don't mind the premise of the story. A young woman tittering on adolescence and adulthood finds out she has some latent powers, thereby, requiring her to attend a specific school with others who possess specific gifts. The story possesses the standard tropes present in these sorts of books- new person at school, crushes, mean girls/guys, lust/petting, loss, rally, power, save the day-ish.
It's interesting but not enough to keep me coming back. I should have viewed it on Goodreads first so that I could gain a better idea of the story that would be told. One of the entries has it listed as a Reverse Harem Paranormal Bully Romance which would have kept me from reading it. I don't dislike the story but I like my paranormal with less romance and less graphic and, mostly unnecessary, sex scenes and pawning. It's probably a great read for someone who is 17-20 years of age.

3.5 stars for A Hellish Year One by Eva Brandt. This is book one in the Academy of the Devil series. This is a dark paranormal reverse harem bully (somewhat) romance. The first thing is that to me I did not find this book very romantic. It seems to be more about the sexual relationship. Alyssa is a human and has to attend the Academy of the Devil with a bunch of demons. She has an attraction to Callum, Stefan, and Mikeal from the start. I do understand what the author was trying to establish with how demons”love”. To me it fell short in this book. I am hoping for more romance in book two. I do love the story line and the characters.
