Could've been a 5* book if it had fewer twists, strands, characters. I liked the voice, it was kind of Arthur Koestler x Dan Brown. as a bridge player, I'm obsessed with the idea of grand jeu now. wish it had been queerer tbh.

I didn’t love The Betrayals as much as I loved The Binding, but still a good read.

I only gave 4 stars not 5 because characters and the plot did become very confusing and difficult to differentiate, and there seemed to be quite an irrelevant storyline of The Rat which became boring.

I also wish the Grand Jeu was explained properly because I spent so much of the book trying to understand what it was and just ended up more confused.

But I did love the portrayal and development of Carfax and Leo’s relationship.

It's not that it wasn't good but I just didn't care for any of the characters enough
Also, I don't mind that the author doesn't really explain what the grand jeu is but I do mind that she didn't explain what it's place in this society is (very light spoiler)
why are there people being persecuted? especially why christians? why does the grand jeu exist and why does the goverment finance it? why does it want to control it so much? what's the belief system in this society? I could go on...

Also, this book could've been absolutley queer and the fact that it isn't annoys me

Man, I struggled with this one. I found it difficult to invest in the story after a certain point. I kept reading because the author has a writing style that I find really easy to get through, and I kept hoping I would get some explanations for certain things that kept popping up. Weirdly, in the end, not fully understanding what the grand jeu was wasn't even the most frustrating thing about this book.

I have a lot of thoughts about this book and not many of them are positive!! Sorry!

updating my rating months later after I spoke to someone about this book. I really didn't like it! It still leaves a bad taste months later and it irks me. Something is cursed about this book.
