There is a running motif regarding fire that runs throughout this book and by the end I was honestly ready to set fire to it myself. Loved The Binding while this was like a depressing and trite remix.

What I liked about the book: the richness of the language and the complicated system of roles and reversals that kept me reading. What I disliked: literally everything else. The attempt at Holocaust imagery is absurd, the love story completely overshadows the setting and the threats, and the characters are completely forgettable and ordinary. The author is also a TERF and you can see it in the way that the final reveal is played out. Honestly want my money back.

I will forever love Bridget Collins’ books as audiobooks & the narrators on this certainly didn’t disappoint.

A lot of people are calling this a fantasy though & I disagree. Montverre certainly invokes a mysterious & ambiguous atmosphere but the ‘game’ they play is surely more akin to a prayer/hymn. I guess it’s possible to read magic into it but it’s definitely not overt. Perhaps there’s some more context for this in the inspiration work cited but I haven’t read it.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience but wasn’t as captivated as I was for the Binding which is a pity.
