A sad but beautifully-written book about how we define family and come to find ourselves. The mystery is not the main thrust of the book, it’s the relationships.
Easy to read, a little slow at times but it was a lively story and managed to develop the characters well throughout.
This book surprised me. I have learned that I'm not the biggest fan of contemporary/literary fiction because they tend to bore me, but this book is so different. I really loved reading the emotional stories about Evangeline, Lorrie, and Isacc. There was some mystery, drama, coming-of-age, and even a little suspense/thriller. I think it's important to note that there are trigger warnings for suicide and some animal cruelty/violence. JoAnne Tompkin's writing style is beautiful and I can't believe this is her debut novel. I'm looking forward to reading more from her!
Sweet book, started out slow but had an enjoyable idealistic ending.
Easy read, interesting characters. A bit melodramatic. 3.5
Beautiful writing about grief and loss, but a LOT about secrets that ultimately never have consequences or don’t impact the main characters’ trajectories. And if you’re a pet person, this book has several dead/dying dogs and multiple stories of harm done to family pets so be prepared for that.
2.5 rounded up to 3.

It wasn’t quite what I was expecting it to be, so I’m a little skewed. I knew it was a drama, but I feel like it was extra drama just because.
