Quite simply, I loved this book. I fell in love with the characters, their decency, their hopes, their trials, and their tenacity. It’s mesmerizing, horrifying, and then mesmerizing again. Read it. ❤️

There are heavy religious themes in this book that I wish I’d known about beforehand.

This book sneaks up on you. It's a slow but powerful read.

I did not expect to like this book but I did. A lot. Nothing stands out but so many moments touched me.

Perfectly fine read, just wasn’t anything I found compelling in it’s telling. Well-written and well-executed, just not interesting to me.

this book has changed my life i think. i just finished it and i’m sitting here sobbing. i feel the glow that’s talked about all throughout this story, and i feel the love shared between everyone. Joanne Tompkins, thank you.

A lot of trauma. Way too drawn out 400 pages. Some seemed unrealistic. I would say gave some interesting things to think about it but lots of potential triggers and not worth the effort IMO

Maybe 2.75. Book offered some interesting insights into life but I'm not sure it fits in the Edgar awards. Much like Venice Sketchbook, it's a pretty well written novel but It isn't much of a mystery or thriller. So, I can not recommend this for mystery afficionados.

An extraordinary novel especially as this is Tompkins's first. She writes beautifully and places words and phrases for ultimate effect. The characters were real with all the ugly bits. It had a rewarding ending without being cloying or fake.

I loved this, couldn’t put it down! I thought the characters were developed really well it kept me wondering what was going to happen to the end. I loved the deep interaction and the ties with the quaker religion. I balled my eyes out at certain parts of this book. My only criticism is that I found found epilogue at the end to be unnecessary. But I would recommend it
