QUICK TAKE: kinda went in expecting a murder mystery, but this is more of an unconventional small town family drama. Not a bad thing, just know that going into this you're not going to get dark and twisty thrills. It's a slow burn story about a man grieving the loss of his son, and a mysterious young woman who comes into his life. I liked a lot about it, but it is not a fast-paced read by any means.

I'm glad I picked this back up after a slow start, cause I ended up really liking it! This isn't a thriller at all or really a mystery either, it's one of those slow burn literary stories with a bit of suspense that don't always work for me. But when they do, it's because the characters get to me. Once I got into this, I ended up getting so invested in these complex characters. Sometimes it's good to come back to a book when you know you just weren't in the mood for it the first time!

This book sucked me in from the beginning and I enjoyed it all the way through. Strong themes, characters and storytelling.

Very impressed for a debut.

Great characterization and story set-up, but the dialogue and plot are both drawn out that it reads more like a screenplay than a novel. An interesting story, but it seems inspired by Where the Crawdads Sing.
