What a book
4.7 ⭐️ Okay, okay, okay… This book started off real slow and had me thinking of dropping it… WOW! Am I ever happy to have pushed through! This was peak epic fantasy! The action was amazingly written and refreshing! I was hooked for the entire second half of this book, but the ending… wow! That was quite something!
Easiest 5 star rating to give to date
Where to start with this book. Well first, don’t be intimidated by the length. There are no lulls in this book and no extra fluff. The entire thing has amazing pacing and only leaves you wanting more.
I started reading The Bound and The Broken series this year and with this book Ryan Cahill has been catapulted into one of my all time top fantasy authors, and authors in general for that matter. The story is compelling and intriguing throughout the entire book and Ryan quickly has you falling in love with the character’s he writes. Each one is so unique and memorable. The twist and turns along the way are only enhanced by the connection you develop with the characters. This books, as the title suggest features a lot of war, however, as someone who can get bored by long drawn out battle scenes in books I did not experience that with Of War and Ruin. Each battle sequence is done so well you never have a chance to be lulled into apathy towards what is happening on the pages. Ryan also does not shy away from the tragedy and consequences of war. This book does not glorify war and in fact does the opposite. The Ruin part of the title is clearly evident throughout. But at the foundation of this book is the characters and the importance of family, both by blood and found. Fighting for the people and things you care about with the aim of creating a better world for them.
If you like fast paced fantasy with dragons in a world with a deep developed history and amazing characters this book is for you! If you liked the previous books in this series you will only love this series more after finishing this book. I don’t know how he does it, but with each book Ryan grows and builds his fantasy world in leaps and bounds. Each entry into this series has been better than the one before. Do yourself a favor and start reading these books! You won’t be disappointed!
