I wanted to love this as much as Going for Kona, but it wasn't the same kind of story. It was very enjoyable but not as much my cup of tea (or coffee!). With this book, I can see why Pamela Hutchins is compared to Janet Evanovich. Only problem is that I don't like Janet Evanovich (I know, I know, legions of fans, just not my thing). Thankfully, I was more drawn to her Emily than to Stephanie Plum.

The story is interesting, focusing on a young woman returning home after a major betrayal. The novel explores the concepts of "can you go home again" as well as illegal immigration and all the implications of it. The backdrop is great - the Western city of Amarillo and the open skies of New Mexico. I'm interested to find out what happens between Jack and Emily.

Fun Mystery about a former Rodeo queen back in Amarillo after finding out that she's pregnant with her soon to be gay ex-husband's child. Lots of mysterious details; lots of secrets (and gossip). Fun book with a good mystery . Pretty far fetched on some of the details -- hard to believe some of it, but still worth reading. Will definitely read book 2.

Nothing like having to move back in with your mother when your marriage comes to an end. But that’s exactly what Emily Bernal had to do.
She found a new job with a law firm as a paralegal. She uses that job and her natural no-how to turn into a major detective and help solve a major murder mystery/kidnapping.
What a great, action-packed story. I had to make myself put it down when I had to sleep. I still read it in less than a day.
Great job!

Emily has had a few curveballs thrown her way lately, so she has returned to her hometown to regroup. After landing a "temporary" job, she finds herself doubling as a paralegal and self-appointed private investigator. The gruff lawyer for whom she is working has had a few curve balls thrown his way as well. After a rough start, they find they are a good match both personally and professionally.
I was excited to read Heaven to Betsy by a fellow Texan and Aggie. With family in Amarillo, it was nice to read about a familiar landscape and way of life. I found this book to be slow to start with a little too much time spent setting the stage. It took about half way through the book for the real action to occur and the details to emerge. Then everything was wrapped up a little too quickly and neatly in the last two chapters. I would have loved to have learned more about Betsy and Jack's pasts sooner in the novel. I do think the stage was set to learn more about the characters in the Emily series book #2.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, more than the Annalise books or Going for Kona. Simply put, it's a good, fun read!
