While I would class A Bright and Breaking Sea as a fantasy book with a romance side plot, this sequel falls more firmly into the fantasy romance category - which is unfortunate, as I feel like that was the weakest part of this book.

I liked the continuation of the macroplot, even if I feel like it has a less satisfying within book arc than the first book had (typical for a series however). We did get even more blatant evidence that the Isles is a fantasy version of England and Gallia is fantasy France (from my very limited history knowledge Gerald might be a fantasy Napoleon?) It works, but I do personally prefer my fantasy countries to not just be a historical country with a different name.

My biggest issue with this was the romance. I liked both Kit and Rian, I even was rooting for them to get together. However, it felt very fast. Given the amount of time to relationship development that happened in the first book, this almost felt like I missed an entire book worth of their relationship. It was especially annoying as, from book one, I was expecting a slow burn throughout the series. Instead we go from the beginning of a slow burn to what felt like a typical historical romance timeline. Neither is bad, I just didn't like the whiplash of having both in the same relationship.

I'm assuming there will be a minimum of one more book, which I will probably pick up and try.

Kit Brightling is definitely a favourite of mine and I love that we get more of her in this book. She is such a fierce and powerful character in a world that while different from ours- still has a hard time with women of authority. Also Rian was back and let me say so lad we get to see more of there relationship develop through this book. Lots of things went down in this book and honestly I can't wait to jump into the next one.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!

Freaking loved this book. Action packed and romance. Kit and Grant were adorable and the story had me on the edge of my seat. A lot of payoffs happened that had been building up from the 1st book. Can't wait for the 3rd to come out!

This is such a fun series. I really like Kit and the voice-iness of the writing -- lots of humorous moments and dialogue. I really enjoy the romance between her and Grant and their banter together. The side characters are just as fun and I enjoyed the plot. I do wish there was more magic or that it was explained a bit more, or had more hard and fast rules to it. Really hope we get more books in this series. It's so much fun.

This had a lot of middle-book stasis (I have to assume a third book is planned) but it’s a fun setting and I liked spending time with the characters.

So much fun!!! I hope there is more adventure, battles, mysteries and magic... And of course Rian and Kit!!!!!

A brilliant sequel. Conflict, even when the stakes are high, is resolved a touch too quickly and neatly for my preference, but the expansion of Kit's knowledge of magic, her reunion and subsequent tumultuous romance with Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, and a few well-executed comedic moments solidly make up for it. Highly enjoyed and highly recommend. Eagerly await the next adventure.
