I really wanted to like this book but unfortunately, I didn’t. The things that Tallie chose to do were very unethical for a therapist, and it was just one right after the other. A lot of times when she would ask Emmett questions, she sounded more like an insecure lover rather than a concerned therapist.

I also didn’t care for the romance between Emmett and Tallie. That was something I wasn’t expecting when I started the book and could’ve done without.

I struggled to finish this book. I listened to it as an audiobook and that’s possibly the only reason I kept going. Never mind the issues with the plot (one could argue that since it’s a fictional work, it doesn’t have to be realistic). I could set aide the ludicrous and problematic premise of a therapist stopping a suicide, then bringing that person to their home (not emergency services), failing to disclose that they are a therapist, provide secret therapy, have sex with said client/non-client. Yes, a myriad of ethical issues but what got to me were instances where the author seemed to forgot the advice so many of us who’ve ever taken a creative writing course receive “show me, don’t tell me”. “The pillow was white. The sheet was white. The bandages were white. The nurse entered, wearing blue. The drip was clear”…..felt like the author was trying to meet a word limit. Some turn of phrases were gorgeous but overall, the writing felt contrite, the characters deeply unlikeable and acting immorally. I didn’t care what happened to any of them

This was a good, solid book. I enjoyed reading it, and I was invested in the characters. But there was nothing special or memorable about it, so it's just a 3 star read for me.

If you’re into something a bit cheesy, and suspending reality in terms of what a normal person would do, this might be the book for you.

I found both characters to be very well developed, but Tallie’s occupation and behaviors to be in conflicting. I know she struggles throughout the book with this, but having friends who are in the mental health field, this situation would never happen. I wanted more from both Tallie and Emmett, and was honestly a bit disappointed at the ending. A heart-warming read for sure, but not as grounded as I hoped.
