This is a good story, but I don't feel it lives up to its hype. It's not as mysterious or scandalous as it feels like it's trying to be. The frame narrative is glaringly transparent, to the point of it being pretty boring to me. Also, I hate HATE when novels give you 30 minutes worth of dialogue and then say it took 4+ hours for the character to say all that. Like, I know it's 30 minutes worth because this is an audiobook... so what was going on for the other 3.5 hours hmmmm???? This book is guilty of that in spades.

I enjoyed the story of Evelyn's life, though, and I appreciate how different kinds of love are shown as just as valuable as romantic love throughout the novel.

In the TJR literary universe, I'd put this lower than Malibu Rising and higher than Daisy Jones, which I'm clarifying because my rating of Daisy Jones is higher... but I'm positive I did not like it enough to qualify it for 4 stars in my current rating system. It's been too long since I've read her earlier writing for me to judge it against any of those.

This book has a special place in my heart. Listening to the audio, I enjoyed myself so much. It is a book that I know I want to buy just so I can return to specific sections.

I love that Evelyn is bisexual. I love how it is addressed that being gay is not the same as being bisexual, how she is attracted to Celia and to men. I appreciate that narrative and nuance and seeing it in such an eloquent way. For me, this was the first time I encountered such an explicitly bisexual character. And I felt seen.

I love how her story is focused on all of that but how her sexuality is NEVER the only thing I care about, nor is it for any of the supporting characters. I loved the gossipy elements but also the way Evelyn uses the gossip and press to control her own narrative.

And I love watching Monique’s life decisions and watching hee grow and create her narrative. I wish we could have stayed with her longer. And yet, maybe I don’t, because the book was great as is.

"When you're given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn't give things, you take things"

Reading 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' is one of my favourite reading experiences to date. It made me, laugh, it made me smile with complete joy, it made me cry, it made me angry and it completely consumed me from start to finish. I adore Evelyn Hugo and her life, I want to have known Evelyn Hugo, I want to have been a part of her life. I want to read more and more about her. The exploration of fame and Hollywood, sexuality, self acceptance, race, religion, sexism, friendship, family, abusive relationships and so much more is nothing short of perfection.

Taylor Jenkins Reid has such an interesting structure to her writing and I very much enjoy it. Both of her books that I have read so far have been an interview structure with dual timelines. It is such an interesting, clever way to write, I find it to immerse the reader in such a profound way. I cannot wait to read more of her work.
