Excellent story! Way too many cuss words for my taste. Almost didn’t finish it. I rushed through to see how it all ends.

Wow. Such a poignant, compelling and very relatable story about the human experience and the dichotomy of “right and wrong” that we deem horrible acts and their perpetrators in society. A really good depiction of the courage and bravery it takes for survivors of sexual assault to come forward. Looking forward to spending more time with these characters in the next few books
Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang.
One of those rare books for everyone. The second and third acts are insanely good.
I never wanted this story to end.

I went in to this one wanting to give it a try but not knowing where I'd land on it. I knew nothing about this book/series except that it was a small town, there was hockey, and it deeply affected so many mutuals that have read it.
I want to start off by saying this book is incredibly well written. The town feels so realistic and reminds me so much of the small town I grew up in. The emotions I exhibited while reading were visceral.
The problem is I hated every bit of this story. I was literally raging almost from minute 1 (as I did read this through the audiobook).
The characters themselves (like the town) reminded me of the community I grew up in. Probably 90-95% of these characters were misogynistic, racist, and tossed out homophobic slurs like they were candy. Some (a VERY small selection) got better by the end of the book but really only towards the one person of color that was on the hockey team and "proved himself". Also, like most small towns, the ONLY importance is the hockey team. Either the children are chasing the glory or the adults are forcing their kids to chase the glory so they can live vicariously through them.
I spent most of this book knowing that this just wasn't going to be my cup of tea but wanting to find out how it ends. I was planning on rating this between 3-4🌟 because, while I really did hate the story, I cannot argue that the book is well written. But then I got to the ending. I sat there stunned and enraged.
If I ever need to rage read a book, I may pick up the sequels.

Backman tackles some hard subject matter, and as usual, nails it. I loved the growth of certain characters. I wish there was more Ramona, she's amazing. The ending was pretty much perfect.
