This book is so extremely frustrating because I do love the worldbuilding but as soon as the romance hits I am entirely checked out!!
I hate how the romance between Paige and Warden functions in every sense. Not only is it uncomfortable to introduce after an entire master/servant (?) storyline, but it also cheapens Warden's commitment to humanity and his betrayal of the Rephaim to shift his motivation to his love for one person. His complicated morals were a major feature of what made his character interesting, but shifting the attention away from his status as an attempted revolutionary and secret rebel and towards a cheap romance undermines his role. I wanted the drama of his betrayal and the downfall of the Rephaim to be enough - surely that in itself is interesting enough. We didn't need the weird romance!

I really loved this book. The writing was suberb, but easy to follow. There were some mistakes, but they were few and far between. When you read this book it puts you in a state of constant suspense. The whole time you're thinking "what's going to happen next?"

Also, I love a book with direction. You're not wadding through pages wondering what the heck is going on and then at the end a light goes off and clarity. You always had a clear path. Samantha Shannon set up each and every step her character would take. Giving you just enough so that you weren't stumbling through the book blind.

That said at no point in the book did I think "I know what's going to happen next." Nor was I bored. Ms. Shannon filled the pages with back story that was interesting and made you understand her characters motives, decisions and actions all the more.

The world building could have been a little more broad, but that didn't detract me from the overall story. Plus, knowing that there are going to be seven more books to the series will give her time to fine tune her world. What I really love in a book is characters. People. That's what drove this story forward for me. She gave her characters a sense of mystery.

There are still many unanswered questions, and I'm looking forward to unraveling them as the series progresses.

Overall a very good read.

this book took too long to make sense. i feel like the writing matured as the book progressed, or maybe i was just getting used to the author. something about the first half of this book felt juvenile to me. not in content, but in writing.

anyway, it was written in 2013 and you can tell. i really enjoyed the second half of the book and i'm very excited to read the second one!
