God, Broder is such a visceral and vulnerable writer. She takes the human experiences that we tuck away into ourselves and flings back the curtains, saying “yeah that’s gross but so what?” And I think that is what makes her writing so fun and affirming to read. I felt like it got a bit repetitive at the end, though my favorite essay was definitely “Under the anxiety is sadness but who would go under there.” Also Milk Fed is just on a totally different plane from this one, so it’s hard to compare. I don’t think everyone would love this (between the sometimes brutal/gross content and her casual voice) but I feel like this provided so much opportunity to reflect and giggle a lot.

there were some essays in this i adored and others that left me very meh. i know the author suffered from eating disorders so i understand she was a writing from a place of dealing with that, but some of the fatphobia in this book was a little hard to read

for the content (and the realness of personal issues this author writes about) broder does a topnotch job on communicating experiences and feelings in a way where she claims to know a little something about life and yet is absolutely not pretentious about it. when i first picked up the book, i was taken aback by the valley girl tone of everything, and somehow it seemed to reek of privilege, but i was wrong and there are certainly some beautiful takes here. am not a huge fan of the writing style but i finished this book because of her authenticity and truth and i think that trumps style preference any day. 

she writes about instances that are true, ugly, and yet are sentiments i immensely resonate with... just... never had the guts to claim. i will be reading more of broder for sure.
