This one's gonna spark some conflicting feelings in a lot of readers. I'll be interested to see commentary and discussion as time passes.

This book is what every Afro indigenous person needs to read regardless of tribe. A literal must read for everyone.

This is not a 101 book (in the best possible way). This is an intersectionality book that should be read after you have already begun the process of understanding both racism and native erasure separately.

This was interesting! It covers some important moments in history, some interesting commentary on popculture, and good directives/reminders. As an introductory text it's got a lot of potential; I recommend picking it up if this topic interests you. I long for a deeper/crunchier history and analysis on this topic, but this is a good place to start.

Interesting things to learn in here. I just had other books I wanted to read first, so I’m putting this down for a bit.

Overall a good read. Mays writes very personally and passionately which makes reading it feel like a conversation. I would have liked a broader discussion of communities, versus the individualist focus that comes up throughout. I think I was expecting more of a sociological review rather than personal essays informed by historical pinpoints.
