i've lowered my expectation but still it disappointed me. the lack of excitement i felt in most of the scenes got me bored very easily. i was hoping that ove would be better than tvd: more surprising and more heart-wrenching but unfortunately, most of the scenes in ove went bland and dissonant. it also appeared to me that the plot was getting nowhere. nevertheless, there are some parts that i loved such as the beautiful prose (i will die to read more of them). i believe chloe gong's writing style will always be her superiority since her writings have never failed to make my mouth hanging agape. ove is certainly not the best book i've read but im still looking forward to read gong's other works!

Great conclusion to this amazing duology. This is a must-read and I am obsessed.

To me, this was significantly better than the first book. There was less tiptoeing around their feelings and relationship, and much more about the actual plotline. It was easier to get into this story and I actually wanted to read through the whole thing.

after the 75% i started just reading diagonally, because it was boring-ish. There is talk about politics. The main characters end up dead.
WE ONLY HAD BRIEF ROMANCE MIND YOU BETWEEN THEM.
you’ll like this if you like politics, and gangsters, but ACTUAL talk about it. it’s a very slow burn.
there were good parts so that’s why it has a 2 and not a 1.

Our violent ends

“It had only been three months, but Roma had changed. She already knew that, of course, from the reports that came back to her about dead gangsters with Korean characters slashed in blood beside them.”
“No longer is madness a contagious matter. The madness strikes at will now, at the whims and mercy of whoever controls the monster.”
“The Central Control Commission of the Kuomintang have made their decision. The Communist Party of China is anti-revolutionary and has undermined our national interest. We have voted unanimously for them to be purged from the Kuomintang- and from Shanghai.”
“Put the Montagov’s heads on Luke’s and be rid of them once and for all.”
“The Scarlet way of life was dead. Kathleen Lang was dead, had always been dead. But Celia Lang was not. Celia had always been here, biding her time, waiting for the moment she could feel safe.”

“And with Roma's nod, she threw the burning flame onto the bags of highly flammable vaccine.”

Roma Quotes
“You killed Marshall. You killed him, and it’s been months, and I haven’t heard a word of explanation from you-“
“When this is over, I will have my revenge. You will answer to me for what you did.”
"Marry me, Juliette. Marry me so we can erase the blood feud between us and start utterly anew."

Juliette Quotes
“Because even if you hate me, Roma Montagov, I still love you.”
“She knew what he would say. But it still tore into her, it still stuns as mightily as razor wire wrapped around her heart, both ends pulled until it could wrap no tighter.”
“These violent delights have violent ends… You have always known this.”
“Because I cannot bear to see you hurt, even when I am the one hurting you the most.”
“I love him. I love him, Tyler, and you tried to take him from me.”
“I would never. I will never leave you.”
“Even death cannot part us.”

“‘Since when do you care about my life?’
‘I don’t. I hate you.’
And when Juliette didn’t recoil, Roma kissed her.”
