Hours into the afternoon we swam to each other
and walked upriver. I remember thinking this
was what life was, and what I had always wanted,
outside, by the river, being pressed on a warm, flat
rock as if our wet imprint there would matter,
as if to say, I am holding on. I am holding on.
my least favorite ada limón so far, but still contains multiple standout poems regardless. worth a read! and yes i'm still in love with her

One band of sun holds its hands
down on the field, but the water's still deep--
the inaccessible earth, the dark birds
in scissors cut the sky
into gray and grayer, two halves
of the same strange atmosphere.
I will read absolutely anything and everything Ada Limón publishes. Her poems stun me and she has this beautiful ability to reach across to the reader and say the seemingly uncommunicable. I really liked a few of the poems in here, notably, "High Water" and "Marketing Life for Those of Us Left". The imagery in "Homesick" and "The Crossing" felt so immediate and original; I loved those as well. I think I will have to read her third section, comprised entirely of one poem, "Fifteen Balls of Fire" a few more times. It's one of those poems that necessitates a few reads. The last section of the book fell a little flat for me, unfortunately. I think her later books, Bright Dead Things and The Carrying, are stronger throughout, but I'm glad to have read this lovely little book.
