It’s truly tragic that this book didn’t live up to any of my expectations for it. It was pointlessly dramatic and filled with anguish that DIDN’T need to be there had the main character simply been a little smarter or thought her life decisions through a little more carefully. Why were the only smart observations and simple solutions to the main problem in this book revealed at the very last second when we were ALL THINKING THEM THE ENTIRE TIME?
Honestly, I just feel bad for McKenna. He went through hell and back for Aline, simply because Aline refused to get over her own insecurities or consider anybody else’s feelings but her own. Which, given the nature of her struggle, I can understand to some extent. But the reasonable objections to her decisions that were voiced by McKenna and Marcus at the very end of the book should have been thought of much earlier and, honestly, by Aline herself. Whatever. By 90% through, I could honestly say that this book was irredeemable, but the ending made up for at least part of the needless anguish. I’m still smarting over the time I wasted reading this book, but I’m a little less peeved with the ending. That, coupled with Kleypas’s writing, are all that are pushing me to give this book a 2, though I can say without a doubt in my mind that this my least favorite Kleypas book by far.
Read this book if you’re fascinated in ridiculous heroines whose mood swings and overwhelming bouts of self-pity are enough to justify putting a good man through years of needless heartbreak and pain. But if you’re not into that, move on to a different work.

I found myself saying ‘That’s it??’. I think having two stories in one book gave a great disservice to both couple.

Great character development, in depth story line, great heat and a decent amount of angst. Would likely read again.
