The Devil Of Nanking

I read the majority of this book in the dead of night and WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THAT. It was CHILLING. I was gonna categorize it as a Thriller/ Crime/ Mystery/ Historical Fiction… but at the same time it honestly feels supernatural as well? It is SO DARK and SO EVIL it is definitely more than just a thriller. This novel runs on two timelines. Individually they are already written well, but together they go so seamlessly, either filling in the blanks or building the story up so I didn’t find myself leaning towards one or the other. It’s well paced too!

Also, what the heck does the Jason character add to this storyline except MAJOR major MAJOR creep energy? He makes my skin feel so dirty I constantly feel like I either need to take a shower or make sure he’s not watching me through my blinds eurgggggghhhh

5 stars for the experience, and taking away 1 star only for the parts in the host club I felt was kinda bleh.

This book gave me chills. Once I picked it up I could not put it down. The history incorporated in this is so fascinating and the way it intertwines with Grey's story is eerie and left me struck with emotion. The mystery behind all of the characters truly pulled me in and... I'm out of words.

That was...underwhelming. Maybe it was the audiobook narration, but I just found this one to be a total bore and difficult to follow at times due to said boredom I experienced. The last 35 minutes or so were what I felt I had slogged through the whole book for, so at least there was some payoff.

Two stories - a young English woman visiting Japan and the 1937
massacre of Chinese civilians in Nanking by Japanese soldiers -
unwind and intersect. Extremely graphic and disturbing. Riveting, mysterious - if you have a strong stomach. Seriously.
